Is It A Bird? Is It A Plane? Is It A T-Shirt? – A Toy Story (1/4/?96)

Toy; film; TV. series; book; magazine. . . . . chicken and egg? Or gestalt merchandising? As I write, Disney’s Toy Story – the first totally computer generated animated feature film – goes on general release.  Like its predecessors, Pocohontos and Lion King, the film’s release date comes several months after clothing bearing the film’s logo and pictures of its characters – Cowboy doll hero, Woody and Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear – hit the childrenswear stands in M&S, Woolworth’s and other multiples.  Major toy stores are filled with copies of the ‘toys’; and McDonald’s  are giving away the collectable plastic characters with their current ‘Happy Meal’ promotion.  Buena Vista  – marketing arm of the Disney corporation  -  have discovered a successful formula.  My six year old son, instantly recognised the toy characters during a recent television advertisement, without ever having seen the toys, the clothing or most importantly, the movie.  The merchandisers, marketing a mix of promotion, licensing, product placement and hype, each segment symbiotically feeding the other, have been able to create an almost syllogistic awareness that transcends reason and guarantees the film’s popularity before anyone has actually seen it.

The fact is, millions will eventually see this movie and in all probability enjoy it.  They will marvel at the spectacular computer generated graphics, rave about the technological miracle of its digital effects, warm to the old-fashioned feel-good storyline and wallow in the seductive post-modern nostalgic appeal of 60’s toys coming alive in high-tech fashion.  They will spread the good word; tell their friends;  implore their parents, to see, buy, use and wear, all the plorethora of merchandise making up the product known as Toy Story.

Supposing nobody liked it.  Hardly possible I’ll admit, but let’s say there’s another film hyped in exactly the same way and thus guaranteed an audience of millions regardless of its reception by the critics.  Would this film warrant the term popular?  A film ‘ of the people’ by token of its box office takings,  Would it be merely a commercial success? Or are these two terms interchangeable?

Popularity implies fondness; even liking a book or film doesn’t necessarily make it popular.  Popularity depends on either a mutual sharing of pleasure by a number of people or a common appreciation of the same pleasure by many individuals.  We may have read a book and enjoyed it so much that we enthusiastically pass it on to a friend, or see a film absolutely everyone you meet just has to see.  If your opinion is shared, then these become common pleasures which in time may gain enough support  to be termed, ‘popular’.  Horse Racing has given rise to the expressions, ‘favourite’ and ‘much fancied’ to describe heavily backed runners and such preferences can be influenced by manipulating the odds.  Affection for a particular animal doesn’t come into it;  clearly, what’s at stake here is not popularity but material gain.  Popular music is another ambiguous term if we consider that over 90% of ‘pop’ records fail to make a profit; and yet if all such records are classified this way, then surely profitability cannot be the sole criteria for defining popularity either.[1] How many admit to following television soap operas? But we constantly see these programmes topping the ratings in the tabloids, statistics revealing millions more viewers than other shows, the same pattern remaining unchanged for years the audience figures for Eastenders and Coronation Street towering above the competition.

So, what exactly have we to gain from Buena Vista’s marketing exercise?  The anticipated promise of pleasure to come from the film and its  various spin-offs perhaps?  Every time we consent to wear a T-shirt in public bearing the legend Toy Story – a tattoo substitute on the extension of our chest skin[2], we should by rights be receiving a royalty.  Not only have we succumbed to becoming a walking advertisement but have also acquired the characteristics of a symbiotic referent system:

Consumer advertises Product : Product advertises Film : Film advertises Product : Product identifies Consumer.

It is one of the most bizarre and depressing triumphs of capitalism in our time that large firms no longer have to buy their own advertising but have discovered a bovine army that is happy to pay a lot to do it for them.[3]

Has this obsequious willingness to be exploited become the modern way to shake off our anomie and achieve some sense of belonging by sharing with strangers a love for a film we haven’t even seen yet?  Is this common affinity with a motion picture akin to the quasi shared togetherness of an ersatz experience like lets say a Telethon?  where we’re all striving towards the same goal . . . . . or are we?  Entrepreneur and garment tycoon, Shami Achmed, shot from moderate success with his clothing warehouse to instant fame by the inspirational use of Joe Bloggs as a brand name; in one stroke he created a product epitomising a sector of the youth market free of identity, presented them with an iconoclastic version of themselves but made it acceptable to one and all – I’m an individual, but I’m just like everybody else.

Disney’s Toy Story is just the latest example of the character merchandising formula pioneered by the Star Wars film trilogy.

Franchises worth .5 billion per year world-wide sold, books, tapes, bedlinen, night-clothes, wallpapers, posters, games – and toys worth 0 million per year to, Palitoy, the General Mills subsidiary.  Subsequently, much more systematic organisation of character merchandising and multi-media links has tended to reverse the spin off, by basing fictional narratives around toys specifically designed with franchising in mind, rather than developing toys from narratives.[4]

Up until October 1994, George Lucas’s Star Wars (1977) was rated fifth all-time money-spinning film, grossing 5.8millions.  Other heavily merchandised movies include Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993) the second highest, grossing 6.5 m. at the US box office.  Only  E.T. (also Spielberg) has taken more, 9.8m. but has been around since 1982, eleven years longer than Jurassic Park.  If we consider that the other 2 titles in the Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983) 3.7m. and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 2.7m. stand at numbers 7 and 12 respectively among the most financially successful; and that other entries include Batman (1989) – 1m. , Ghostbusters (1984) -0.9m., Aladdin (1992) – 7.3m. and Lion King (1994) – 267.4m. already the most successful animated film of all time;  it’s hardly surprising that this form of promotion has not only become the norm but is also eagerly awaited by insatiable consumer media junkies whose gargantuan appetite for the ‘new’ demands its regular fix.[5] For several years now, the Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook has provided an extensive list of agents specialising in the handling of rights connected with the promotion of characters from books and television programmes etc.  Surprisingly, the BBC is a major player in this respect, and a company trading as Copyright Promotions, handles characters as diverse as Fiddley Foodle Bird and Elvis Presley.

In the departure lounge at  Manchester Airport is a shop devoted exclusively to the sale of character merchandise in all its forms.  For anyone looking for a last minute gift, this shop stocks everything from the Disney stable in addition to Star Wars, Barbie and many others, guaranteed to please any child, anytime; anyplace, anywhere.

This collaborative merchandising makes the companies involved ‘economically interwoven in the same way in which Television is dependent on the Electricity companies or a haulage company is dependent on petroleum.[6] By using cultural intertextuality to create a secondary communication system, all resistance breaks down.[7]

Character  dolls were first introduced as long ago as 1909 by German manufacturers Kämmer and Reinhardt whose dolls were modelled on the grandchildren of the company’s founders.  About the same time, Käthe Kruse, wife of sculptor Marc Kruse, used her own children as models for her ‘artistic dolls’ which she made by hand painting muslin heads and attaching them to stockinet bodies and in 1910 produced a range of realistic looking dolls complete with names, some of them the actual size and weight of a real baby, correct in every detail and even including  a navel.  The idea was taken further by Gebrüder Heubach with both dolls and figurines.  During this same period, a number of prestigious dolls were being manufactured in France for the luxury market whilst in America, companies like Acme began importing dolls from Germany and later from Japan as well as commissioning American manufacturers to produce dolls to their own exclusive specifications, thus establishing New York City as the centre of the Doll trade.[8] Borgfeldt, distributed the famous Kewpie doll manufactured by Joseph Kullus in Brooklyn from designs by Rose O’Neill which were supplied in large quantities to the Carnival trade by the TipTop Toy Company.  Kallus went on to become a prolific doll designer during the 20’s and 30’s and his designs under license, most often made by the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company include Betty Boop, Popeye(1932) and Disney’s Pinocchio (1939). In 1945, Mattel Inc., an American company began manufacturing dolls in a converted garage. They launched the original Barbie doll in 1958.[9] Although fashion dolls had been around since the latter part of the 19th century in France, they had all been replicas of children with the notable exception of character dolls such as Spanish dancers.[10] Barbie was the first real doll with attitude; not a baby, but a young woman complete with open-mouthed expression, jet-set lifestyle fantasy world, and even a boyfriend, Ken, was added to the range.  Barbie was truly an important and underestimated catalyst of social change, paving the way for Action Man figures and shaking the ideological conventions of the girl stereotype and her associated play preparations for future motherhood.  Mattel’s most significant achievement however was their revolutionary marketing innovation of selling not only the standard doll, but also a range of matching accessories thus creating the potential for accumulative future sales.  Skiing outfits, lounging pyjamas, a wedding dress, car, house and even friends for Barbie to play with, sold of course without clothes as each outfit cost extra and possibly leading to the unfortunate assumption that money can buy friends (and hence happiness).[11] Perhaps the separate outfits idea was merely an extension of the paper cut-out dolls I remember my young sister playing with as a child, but the add-on fantasy world items were an unprecedented masterstroke obviously responsible for the company’s meteoric success.  By 1970, Mattel had become one of the largest manufacturers and toy distributors in the world, owning factories at its headquarters in California and also in Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico and England through its subsidiary, Rosebud. Barbie was copied in 1978 by the British company, Pedigree, whose  Sindy dolls designed by Dennis Arkinstall had a less aggressive shape and sexiness than Barbie and thus more suitable for the subtler not-so-glitzy British market, but available, nevertheless, with a vast range of accessories.[12]

Graham Dawson states that corporations like Hasbro Bradley maximise profits by designing gender specific product lines in order to construct differential market sectors.  In developing two complimentary collectible ranges for example, Action Force for boys and My Little Pony for girls, Hasbro Bradley actively stimulates play narratives which emphasise both masculine and feminine stereotypes. Current research finds that boys show a natural preference to ‘war toys’ (sic),[13] but apart from colour choice and style of packaging, there is essentially no difference between a girls’ first make-up set, an Action Force camouflage kit and a box of children’s face paints.

Children are the starting point.  Advertisers have clearly taken a leaf out of the Jesuits’ book: ‘give me a child before he is seven and he belongs to the Church for life’. Children are fiercely competitive; so appealing to their snobbish and peer instincts ensures that at an early age they begin to harass their parents into buying whatever may be the latest childish fashion.[14]

The advertisers begin by luring children.  Because of parent’s apprehension, most children no longer go out to play in the streets and the immediate neighbourhood, and since television, not the hearth, is now the centre of the living room, admen have a captive audience; the appetite of the child is inflamed by beaming an unremitting display of the latest mechanical and electronic toys.[15]

The child wearing logo stamped clothing or carrying a toy from McDonald’s  becomes much more than a walking advertisement for the film and its associated merchandise.  Even McDonald’s campaign is accumulative – a new, different toy gift each week for the five weeks of the promotion – why not collect them all?  All these items become cultural reference points, the way children measure their lives.  I overheard my young son and daughter playing a guessing game which involved quoting from one of their favourite TV shows and guessing the programme it came from. Whilst the game in itself is harmless and even imaginative coming from children restricted in their viewing habits and sheltered as much as possible from the dangers of advertising, the situation seems uncontrolled and irresponsible with artifacts of merchandise reaching out through perfidious product placement on programmes they are allowed to watch and even over the breakfast table on the backs of cereal packets.  McCluhan’s ‘60’s prognosis was chillingly correct:

The new mass culture we are moving into – a world of total involvement in which everybody is so profoundly involved with everybody else and in which nobody can really imagine what private guilt can be anymore.[16]

Children, McLuhan contends, are bombarded with visual imagery, sitting closer and closer to the screen, wanting to be absorbed into it.  Gary Day says that, ‘. . . . images on television are so like the images encountered in ordinary life that their veracity seems unquestionable’[17] and this may pose a real danger to receptive and easily influenced young minds.

Since the 1930’s, a movement for educational toys informed by psychoanalysis has criticised a general tendency towards increasingly representational toys.[18] The argument goes that non-representational toys without a fixed form allow freer reign to the child’s creative imagination: so small figures unmarked by occupational or other codings are preferred to, say, toy soldiers or farm workers.  In a connected although different argument, accurate representational detail in toys is thought to interfere with a child’s developing capacity to distinguish between ‘fantasy’ and ‘reality.’[19]

There was recent controversy when Mattel in an unprecedented move, refused to allow Disney to give the Barbie doll  in Toy Story a personality.[20] I submit that representational toys by token of their sheer overwhelming quantity and strength of their promotion, created and stamped by Television, Film and Video have gone a stage further than restricting imagination, by providing a ready made fantasy world peopled by characters so realistic that our acceptance of them as real in some way turns us into such willing fanatical champions of their cause that we do not feel in any way demeaned or exploited in offering up our bodies to advertise them.  In a world that hero worships a cartoon mouse, is it any wonder that we make no distinction between wearing a T-shirt sporting a picture of, say, a famous footballer or musician and in wearing one bearing the image of an even more famous, verbally-challenged sailor-suited duck. Could there be perhaps a connection here with the soap opera character – not the actor – who receives letters and advice from viewers.

From the workshop to the laboratory, having emptied productive activity of all meaning for itself, Capitalism strives to place the meaning of life in leisure activities and to reorient productive activity on that basis since production is Hell in the prevailing moral schema, real life must be found in consumption, in the use of goods.[21]

Using elements of ritual magic, someone has visualised it, manufactured it, and through the technology of interactive audio-visual media – it’s a video, it’s a movie, it’s a computer game – breathed life into it by giving it colour, movement and most importantly it’s own language (magic words) – Shazam, which stamps and fixes its personality (creates it) thus making it ‘real’, at least as real as the latest Pop or Football idol whose image beckons, red hot from the T- shirt press.  Whether it’s Michael Jackson, Batman or that ubiquitous cartoon mouse, apparently, we idolise them and advertise them in exactly the same way.[22]

A possible definition of the real is: that for which it is possible to provide an equivalent representation.[23]

Under monopoly all mass culture is identical, and the lives of its artificial framework begin to shine through.[24]

It is not surprising that Baudrillard sees Disneyland as the ‘real’ America, when one considers the ‘hyperreality’ of life in Los Angeles for example, notably Hollywood in particular.  Life is nothing but a theme park.[25] He claims that all cultural artifacts and their associated ideology are inseparable from the world of commerce which raises the question of possible differences between exchange value – the price paid, and use value – the intangible benefit gained from the purchase of consumables.  Marketing gurus say, we buy dreams.  The young housewife on her first trip to London who treats herself to a plastic carrier bag from Harrods or a T-shirt from Planet Hollywood is using the same indexical narrowcast codes as the more sinister scenario of the school dropout who suddenly turns up in the playground sporting the latest £200+ training shoes and designer baseball cap.[26] Their ideologies may be opposed but nevertheless they share the same hegemonic struggle.  Could there be a nascent possibility that consumables are being bought and displayed out of the fear of not belonging rather than the need to belong? Look at me, I know what’s happening. I’ve got the latest thing.  I seem to belong.[27]

One notable exponent of mass merchandising is Saban International, creators of the deservedly popular  Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  A curiously eclectic hybrid, this hugely successful children’s TV show combines elements of teenage comic book superheroes with secret identities, up-to-the-minute space-age technology, cliffhanging serial excitement, Japanese Ninja movies, moral rectitude, heavy metal music, Transformers – an earlier children’s programme from another company, comedy routines, outrageously camp monsters, hammy overacting and universal role models.

The creators of this ultimate postmodern audio-visual cocktail are no strangers to television.  Headed by expatriate Israelis, Haim Saban and Shuki Levi who, domiciled in Los Angeles for many years, cut their teeth on cartoon shows like Barney, X-Men, He Man and David the Gnome.  Writer and director Levi, is also responsible for the music. According to an article in the Guardian last year, the series uses original Japanese film where all the characters involved in fight sequences are dressed in costumes which totally hide their faces, and footage of the American teenagers we have come to know and love is spliced in.  I don’t believe it, although several Japanese names occasionally get a mention in the credits.  Perhaps the pilot show was made in this way, but the program relies so much on surreal monsters created from everyday artefacts such as transistor radios, pinball machines, mirrors, cameras and if I’m not mistaken there was one occasion when a chocolate cake came to life and tried to annihilate our heroes; these are such an integral part of the narrative as to be an impossible task to replicate, let alone edit.

As the show began to wane in popularity – semioticians take note – the creators produced a four part episode where the heroes lost their powers – which emanate from gold coins (money = power); and when they finally regained them, they were transformed into a stronger and more powerful force than ever before (a symbolic wishful thinking.) The new powers are accompanied by new combat uniforms and weaponry that result in the toys and ubiquitous paraphernalia that were on sale previously to become redundant and require immediate replacement by the faithful fan whilst providing enough attention grabbing merchandise, i.e. the new toys, to ensnare the hapless potential convert. A similar exercise ensued at the height of the shows dominance.  A seminal episode featured a World youth peace conference and featured a guest appearance from Israel’s Teen-Queen, and top children’s television hostess, Michal Yaani. The erstwhile leader – all American boy, Jason, the Red Ranger – together with Afro-American Zack the (surprise, surprise) Black Ranger and Japanese Trini  (of course, you guessed it,) the Yellow Ranger, left to go on a mission promoting World peace. This obviously meant that a new leader would have to be chosen, and the Green Ranger Tommy – who would you believe had incidentally just lost his powers – is transformed by the Demi-God Zordon into a White Ranger and given even greater powers (that Zordon said could never be taken away from him. Seems you can’t even trust a Demi-God these days.)  He is also given a special sword for his new role as leader, and his mortal friends, Rocky, Adam and Aisha, who had been captured along with him by Lord Zed, become the new Rangers replacing Jason, Zack and Trini.  So now we have an extra Ranger as well as a new leader with a new costume and a new weapon.  In his new costume, he bears an uncanny resemblance to the Academy Award statuette, ‘Oscar.’ It’s no surprise that the release of Power Rangers the Movie is imminent.  NEW TOYS.  NEW STICKERS.  NEW FANS.

Clever networking ensured that each complete story is shown in 15 – 20 minute episodes over several days, or at weekends in 2 or 4 part segments.  Not only are the episodes punctuated with the obligatory advertisements, but a totally irrelevant 5 minute feature – Mr. Motivator visits Spain, for example – is spliced in when you least expect it, thus interrupting and hindering any attempt at video-taping.  It will come as no surprise that commercially produced videotapes of the series, containing 2 x 20 minute episodes of the show can be purchased at most supermarkets and video shops for about £10 each.

An important factor in communication in the mass arts is high redundancy.  TV plays, radio serials, entertainers, tend to resemble each other ( though there are important and clearly visible differences for the expert consumer).[28]

Riding the momentum of the movie and the continuing success of the TV series, Saban brought out a new show aimed at slightly older children, VR Troopers, which was a variation of the same formula but slightly more sophisticated in content; it was scheduled to be shown concurrently with Power Rangers, but there was no contest.  The magic words were there,  ‘We are V. R.’  and ‘Forces of darkness empower me;  take me back to my virtual reality’ replacing ‘It’s Morphin time’ and ‘ Tyrannosaurus, Dinosaur, Red Dragon Thunderzord ’  but it lacked the charismatic appeal and innocence of the original.

So is this aggressive marketing policy a purely a cold-blooded exercise in extracting as much money as possible from the consumer, or merely a way of stretching more out of the original product which in this particular case is a good one, and as with any film involves an enormous creative effort? Using similar strategy,Tesco recently  extended their opening hours until 8 o’clock each evening thus effectively gaining an extra day’s trading for a ridiculously small additional outlay, (minimal wage bill for a skeleton staff; same overheads.)

With the making of Toy Story, the Pixar Company’s producer, Ralph Guggenheim’s deal with Disney finally allowed director John Lasseter to realise his artistic dream after years of experimentation during the 80’s.  Lasseter first got excited about the potential of computer graphics after seeing them used in Disney’s, Tron (1982). That same year, he started to make Wild Thing which combined regular cartoon animation with computer graphics to flesh out the images; but the film was never completed.  In 1986 he made the short, Red’s Dream and quickly followed it with Luxo Jr. a milestone in animation as the characters looked alive because of the 3 dimensional element and superior quality of the computer graphics.

The popular arts of our industrial civilization are geared to technical changes which occur, not gradually, but violently and experimentally.[29]

In 1989, Lasseter directed Knick Knack and also Tin Toy which won Pixar an Academy Award for best animated short film.  This ‘Oscar’ spurred Lasseter’s endeavour to create a full length feature, and with the help of screenwriter Andrew Stanton, and staying with the idea of toys, they eventually came up with Toy Story.  Toys were not a new concept to animation having been successfully featured in Broken Toys (1935) and Pinocchio (1939) amongst others.  Lasseter always wanted to make a ‘’Buddy’ movie and after analysing several films of this genre he concluded that the narrative worked because of the partnering of two characters that were essentially opposites.  It was decided that a new toy ( plastic spaceman, Buzz ) and an old one, (cowboy puppet, Woody) would be tantamount to pairing Buck Rogers with Roy Rogers.  Number one box-office draw, Tom Hanks was cast as the voice of Woody and television comedy actor, Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz.  The result is Toy Story which has received very favourable reviews although the animation and technical achievement has been admired considerably more than the story itself.  The 78 minute film consists of 114,000 separate frames of 2 – 4 hours each in its original unedited form and would take over 9 months to view if played 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  One scene, involving green plastic, badly moulded toy soldiers is totally self indulgent and adds nothing to the story, doesn’t move the narrative along in any way, but does, however add considerable nostalgic appeal for fathers who happened to grow up in the 50’s and 60’s.[30]

So,  I suppose that makes Toy Story a work of Art, although it almost isn’t.

And, Power Rangers clearly isn’t, although it almost is.

Art as Merchandise : Merchandise as Art.  Pop Art.

Movies and Radio need no longer pretend to be art.  The truth that they are just business is transformed into an ideology in order to justify the rubbish they deliberately produce.[31]

Art and industry can thus exchange signs: art, in order to become a reproductive machine (Andy Warhol), without ceasing to be art, since this machine is only a sign;  and production, in order to lose all social purpose and thus to verify and exalt itself at last in the hyperbolic and aesthetic signs of prestige, that are the great industrial combines, the 400-meter-high business blocks and the statistical mysteries of the GNP. . . . . . .[32]

epilogue:

A wind-up spaceman Buzz Lightyear figure from MacDonald’s lies abandoned in deep space 9 somewhere in my son’s bedroom.  Toy story pencil cases, colouring books and plastic beakers linger unwanted on the reduced-to-clear counter of the local supermarket. Saban International have temporarily dropped the Power Rangers to introduce their latest superhero, The Masked Rider. It is now July, the school holidays have begun and the Disney corporation has a new hit.  My son, Orrie, pulls on the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’ socks he has managed to talk my wife into buying for him, and comes downstairs to the kitchen where his sister, Alexandra is carefully arranging a plastic Esmeralda that glows in the dark among 3 friendly looking gargoyles – MacDonald’s latest bait, on the mantelpiece.  It is raining and my wife asks them if they’d like to go to the cinema;  a rare treat.  ‘ Which film would you prefer to see, Toy Story or the Hunchback of Notre Dame?’ Quasimodo – an unlikely hero – wins hands down.  There is no contest.  The King is dead.  Only  Queen Barbie, who doesn’t have a Hollywood contract – lives forever.

Aviation Sights of Long Island

1. Long Island’s Aviation Seed 

The aviation seed planted on Long Island’s Hempstead Plains in 1909, when Glenn Curtiss had first flown above it in his Golden Flyer biplane, had sprouted and grown over a six-decade period until it had ultimately connected its own soil with that of its moon. 

Its many aerospace sights, depicting its general aviation, commercial, military, and space branches, and geographically spread between Garden City and Calverton, recount this journey. 

2. Cradle of Aviation Museum 

The Cradle of Aviation Museum, located on Museum Row in Garden City near the Coliseum, Nassau Community College, and Hofstra University, tells most of Long Island’s aerospace story. 

Tracing its origin to 1979, when then-County Executive Francis T. Purcell designated funds to restore two aircraft hangars at former Mitchel Field, it displayed several dozen aircraft until it closed for renovation in 1995.  The 130,000-square-foot, million facility, opening on the 75th anniversary of Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight in 2002, showcases more than 70 air- and spacecraft, 11 of which are one-of-a-kind designs, associated with or constructed on Long Island and uncovered during a 20-year search which had stretched from the bottom of Lake Michigan to Guadalcanal.  They had then been restored and preserved by retired airline and defense aircraft manufacturer volunteers who collectively contributed some 650,000 man-hours to the project.  The result had been Long Island’s largest, year-round, educational, recreational, and cultural institution. 

According to New York State Governor George E. Pataki, museum visitors “can see the brief span of years that brought Long Island from hosting the fragile biplanes of 1911 to building the Lunar Module that took mankind to the moon in the sixties.  Through these displays, the Cradle becomes a powerful mirror that reflects our own skills, intellect, and ability to conquer time and space and pays tribute to American innovation and pioneering spirit.” 

The Cradle of Aviation Museum, dominated by its impressive, four-story, glass atrium Reckson Center, greets visitors with a ceiling-suspended Grumman F-11A Tiger supersonic fighter in Blue Angels livery and a 1929 Fleet 2 biplane trainer, symbolically representing the soaring ascent of Long Island’s aviation heritage. 

The main exhibits, located in eight galleries in the two restored Army Air Corps Hangars 3 and 4 which still bear the words “Mitchel Field.  Elev 90 Feet” on their facades, and now designated the Donald Everett Axinn Air and Space Hall, are accessed by a second floor skywalk at whose entrance a third ceiling-suspended replica of a 1922 Sperry Messenger biplane designed by the Lawrence Sperry Aircraft Company of Farmingdale hangs. 

According to the skywalk’s plaque, “Long Island has been at the forefront of American’s aviation and space adventure for the past one hundred years…It all started here on Long Island’s Hempstead Plains.” 

A one-flight descent leads to the first of the museum’s galleries, “Dream of Wings.”  Depicting the triumph of flight with lighter-than-air craft, it demonstrates how balloon, kite, glider, and airship experimentations turned the dream of flight into reality and led to its heavier-than-air successors, displaying aerostatic lift generation, Alexander Graham Bell’s tetrahedral kite, an Otto Lilienthal glider, and a 1906 Timmons kite built in Queens, the museum’s oldest flying exhibit.  A 20-hp Glenn Curtiss airship engine, designed two years later, and a Mineola Bike Shop, demonstrating, in the Wright Brothers’ vein, the technology transfer from the bicycle to the aircraft with propellers and wings, round out the exhibits. 

The “Hempstead Plains” gallery, the next encountered, represents a 1910 air meet.  Amid recordings of turning propellers and accelerating aircraft, a collection of early designs graces the grass-carpeted field and includes an original Bleriot XI of 1909, the world’s fourth-oldest, still-operational airframe; a spruce-and-bamboo replica of Glenn Curtiss’s Golden Flyer, the first heavier-than-air airplane to fly over Long Island; a replica of a Wright Brothers’ Vin Fiz; a Hanriot monoplane; a Farman biplane, a 1911 Anzani engine; and a 1913 Studebaker “motor car.” 

During World War I, as evidenced by the succeeding gallery, the triumph of flight was transferred into the destruction of man, as the airplane assumed the reciprocal role of a weapon, and Long Island had become the center of military aircraft design, testing, and production during this time.  On display is the first airplane acquired by Charles Lindbergh, a Curtiss JN-4 Jenny purchased in 1923 for 0; along with a 1918 Breese Penguin trainer, the only one of the 250 originally produced remaining; an airworthy Thomas-Morse S4C Scout biplane with its original Marlin machine gun; and the F. Trubee Davison World War One wooden hangar, which sports the ribbed, uncovered airframe of a Curtiss Jenny with its engine, propeller, and fuel tank; and a 160-hp Gnome Monosoupope, 1916 engine from France. 

During the Golden Age of Aviation, which spanned the 20-year period from 1919 to 1938, aviation matured, evolving from a dangerous sport to a viable commercial industry.  The motley collection of aircraft in this gallery includes the sister ship to the original Ryan NYP Spirit of St. Louis and used during the filming of the epic tale; an Aircraft Engineering Corporation “Ace,” which became America’s first sport plane; a replica of a Curtiss/Sperry Aerial Torpedo; a 1932 Grumman F3F-2 Navy Scout fighter; a Brunner Winkle Model A Byrd biplane built in Glendale, Queens; an American Aeronautical Corporation/Savoia Marchetti S-56 amphibian made in Port Washington; and a Grumman G-21 Goose in blue, Pan American Airways System livery. 

During World War II, as reflected by its respective gallery, the aircraft produced by Repubic and Grumman had been crucial to US victory, and within the six-year period from 1939 to 1945 depicted, some 45,000 airframes had rolled off the production line.  On display are a powerless Waco CG-4 Troop Glider, which had been used to deliver soldiers behind enemy lines; a Republic P-47N Thunderbolt; a Grumman F6F Hellcat, a Grumman TBM Avenger, a Grumman F6F Hellcat, a Douglas C-47 cockpit and nose section, and the Sperry Type A-2 lower gun turret which had protected the undersides of B-17 and B-24 long-range bombers. 

The pure-jet engine, as evidenced by the Jet Age Gallery, revolutionized military aviation by endowing aircraft with unprecedented speed, range, maneuverability, and attack capability, and Grumman Aircraft Corporation had been instrumental in this development, having designed more than 40 civilian and military types which totaled some 33,000 airframes and provided employment for 200,000 Long Island residents.  Its military aircraft, particularly, had played crucial roles in numerous conflicts, including those in Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq.  On display are several Grumman designs, inclusive of an E-2 Hawkeye airborne early warning/command-and-control aircraft, an F9F-7 Cougar, the forward fuselage of an F-14 Tomcat, and an A-6 Intruder cockpit simulator, while Republic Aviation is represented by an F-84B Thunderjet, an F-105B supersonic fighter, and an A-10A Thunderbolt cockpit section.  A Boeing 727 nose and cockpit section and a Westinghouse J-34 turbine engine round out the exhibits. 

The “Contemporary Aviation” gallery features air traffic control radar screens which emphasize the congested JFK, La Guardia, and Newark airport triplex, along with their secondary airports of Long Island MacArthur and Westchester County’s White Plains, and Farmingdale’s Republic Airport, the states’ busiest general aviation/reliever field. 

The “Exploring Space” gallery, the last of the eight, depicts the dramatic transition from atmospheric flight to vacuumless space and emphasizes Long Island’s rich contribution to this aerospace sector.  Its exhibits include a Goddard A-series rocket; a Grumman orbiting astronomical observatory; a Grumman echo adapter; a life-size model of the Sputnik satellite which had been presented by the Soviet Union and whose original hardware had launched the Space Race; a Grumman Rigel ramjet missile from 1953; a Grumman Lunar Module simulator; and a Rockwell Command Module which had been used during a 25,000-mph earth reentry test in 1966 prior to the manned Apollo flights. 

A “Clean Room,” representing the environment in which all Lunar Modules had been hand-made, leads to the gallery’s—and the museum’s—most precious exhibit, an actual, 22.9-foot-high, gold foil-covered LM-13, the thirteenth and last Lunar Module built, dramatically lit with its legs nestled on a simulated moonscape.  Designated an historic mechanical landmark, the Lunar Module had been the first—and thus far, only—spacecraft to have ever transported human beings from earth to another planet or its moons. 

The Museum Annex Jet Gallery, which shares facilities with the Long Island Firefighter’s Museum, features a Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, the forward fuselage of a Grumman F-14A, a full F-14A Tomcat airframe, a Grumman A-6F Intruder, and the forward nose section and cockpit of an El Al Boeing 707. 

Other museum facilities include the seven-story-high, 300-seat, 76-foot-wide Leroy R. and Rose W. Grumman IMAX Theater, New York state’s largest domed venue and Long Island’s only IMAX screen; the Martian-themed Red Planet Café, which displays a 1961 Grumman “Molab” Mobile Lunar Laboratory designed for lunar surface travel, habitation, and testing; a balcony-located Aerospace Honor Roll; and the Mitchel Field Outpost gift and bookstore. 

The Cradle of Aviation Museum is a world-class facility which preserves, showcases, and interprets Long Island’s rich aerospace heritage. 

3. American Airpower Museum 

The American Airpower Museum, located at Farmingdale’s Republic Airport, oozes with history.  It is housed in an historic hangar, where historic World War II aircraft had been built, and these had then been tested at this historic airfield. 

Republic Airport itself, founded in 1928 as Fairchild Flying Field when Sherman Fairchild’s existing facility had become too small to support continued FC-2 and Model 71 production, had passed the torch to Grumman for a five-year period, from 1932 to 1937, when the Fairchild Engine and Aircraft Manufacturing Company itself had relocated to Maryland. 

Seversky, establishing its presence on the field in 1935, continued its tradition of aircraft building and testing, redesignating itself “Republic Aviation” and considerably expanding its facilities with three new hangars, a control tower, and a longer runway.  A major supplier of military designs, it churned out more than 9,000 P-47 Thunderbolts during the Second World War and 800 F-105 Thunderchiefs during the Vietnam conflict. 

After acquiring the airport in 1965, Fairchild-Hiller sold it to Farmingdale Corporation, which turned it into a public facility the following year, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), purchasing it for million in 1969, renamed it Republic Airport, lengthening existing Runway 14-32, constructing a 100-foot FAA control tower, and building a small passenger terminal. 

The 526-acre general aviation/reliever airport, whose ownership once again changed to the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) in April of 1983, exerts some 9 million of economic impact on Nassau and Suffolk Counties.  Its 546 based and transient aircraft record 190,723 annual movements, of which 93 percent encompass general aviation, six percent air taxi, and one percent military, in a full spectrum of aircraft types, including single-engine, multi-engine, piston, turboprop, pure-jet, and rotary wing, and these utilize its two runways: 5,516-foot Runway 1-19 and 6,827-foot Runway 14-32.  As New York’s third largest airport in terms of take offs and landings after JFK and La Guardia, and its largest general aviation field, it handled 1,634 enplanements, mostly due to charter flight activity, in 2005. 

Amidst this atmosphere, off of New Highway, is the American Airpower Museum.  Hangar 3, its location, had been completed in 1927, along with other structures at a 0,000 cost and had served as the incubation point of some 9,000 Republic P-47 Thunderbolts during the Second World War.  As a result, it had once been considered part of the “arsenal of democracy.”  The museum, launched after a 0,000 grant from Governor George E. Pataki and dedicated during the airport’s annual Pearl Harbor Day Commemorative Service in 2000, had been built to serve as a living tribute to Long Island’s veteran population by honoring the past with the present, and to create a regional tourist destination, along with the Cradle of Aviation Museum. 

Colonel Francis Gabreski, who scored most of his World War II victories in Republic P-47s, had been the highest ranking ace on Long Island and had initially served as the museum’s honorary commander. 

Complementing the static displays at the Cradle of Aviation Museum itself, the American Airpower Museum features the sights, sounds, and experiences of operational World War II fighters and bombers, the first time in 54 years that the New York metropolitan area can boast of such an accomplishment.  As the Williamsburg of military aviation, the facility accurately proclaims its mission as “where history flies.” 

Its varied collection of pristinely restored aircraft encompass trainers, fighters, carrier-based Navy, ocean reconnaissance, bombers, and post-World War II jet types. 

The North American T-6 Texan, for instance, first flew in 1935 and was one of the most widely used advanced fighter pilot trainers during the war. 

Of the fighters, the Curtiss-Wright P-40 Warhawk, which also first flew that year, attains 363-mph speeds and currently wears Flying Tiger livery.  No aircraft could be more at home in the American Airpower Museum’s Hangar 3, however, than the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, the very design which was assembled here in the thousands.  First taking to the skies from the runway only yards away in 1940, it was the largest, heaviest, single-engine, single-pilot piston fighter ever produced, attaining 467-mph speeds.  The P-51 Mustang, whose maximum speed had been 30 mph lower than the Thunderbolt’s, flew high-altitude escort missions of B-17 and B-24 long-range bombers, shooting down more enemy aircraft than any other World War II European theater fighter. 

Of the Navy aircraft, the Grumman TBM Avenger, a carrier-based torpedo bomber, had hunted German U-boats off the coast of Long Island, while the Vought FG-1D Corsair had been used by both the Navy and the Marines and had achieved 446-mph airspeeds. 

The Consolidated PBY Catalina, a high-wing, amphibious ocean reconnaissance aircraft flown by a crew of eight, searched for enemy submarines.  It had a 2,545-mile range, a 15,748-foot service ceiling, and a 178-mph speed. 

The museum’s twin-engined, medium-range North American B-25 Mitchell bomber, designated “Miss Hap,” had been General Hap Arnold’s personal aircraft, while the type in general had been made famous by the Doolittle Raid. 

The collection also includes several jet fighters.  The L-39 Albatross, for example, is a 570-mph Soviet trainer which first flew in 1968 and is still in service with 16 countries.  The Republic F-84 Thunderjet, one of the first pure-jet fighters, attained 620-mph speeds and served from 1948 to the Korean War.  The RF-84 Thunderflash, also designed by Republic, is a 720-mph photoreconnaissance aircraft with horizon-to-horizon photograph capability, and served between 1953 and 1971.  The Republic F-105 Thunderchief, a supersonic fighter and attack bomber, had been most extensively deployed in Vietnam in its F-105D guise, carrying more than 12,000 pounds of ordnance and achieving 1,390-mph speeds.  It served for a quarter of a century, from 1955 to 1980.  The General Dynamics F-111, a supersonic, March 1.2, variable-geometry strike aircraft, first flew in 1967, and had seen service in Vietnam, Libya, and Iraq. 

Aside from the aircraft themselves, there are nose and cockpit sections, including those of a Fairchild-Republic A-10, a Mig-21, a Beech 18/C-45, and a Douglas C-47, as well as engines, such as a General Electric J-47 and an Allison V-1710. 

World War II’s aviation story is also told by means of films, period scenes and dioramas, an extensive model and memorabilia collection, vintage vehicles, a “Ready Room,” a “Briefing Room,” a “Canteen,” a gift shop, and era-related music. 

Tours are periodically provided to the historic, five-story, 1943 control tower located in Hangar 4.  The view from the cab, amid vintage radio and radar equipment overlooking Republic airport’s two runways, provides insight into the controllers’ functions, which often included coordinating vectors from P-47s, A-10s, F-84s, and F-105s enroute to the region’s dense air base network comprised of Zahns Airport, then virtually across the road, Grumman in Bethpage, Mitchel Field in Garden City, the Floyd Bennett Field Naval Air Station in Brooklyn, and the Vought factory across Long Island Sound in Connecticut, a network emphasizing Long Island’s early nucleic role in aviation. 

Because the American Airpower Museum’s collection is predominantly operational, several flight experiences are offered. 

Its own, and signature, opportunity, aboard a Douglas C-47 Skytrain which had last been used by the Israeli Air Force, simulates the famed, D-Day allied invasion of Normandy during the early-morning hours of June 6, 1944. 

After donning paratrooper uniforms, helmets, and modified parachutes in the Ready Room, would-be jumpers move to the Briefing Room, where, amid wooden benches and period maps, the pending mission is detailed, along with the necessary regrouping maneuver behind French hedgerows after parachuting to the ground.  French francs are distributed. 

The cohesive, identically clad team now climbs aboard the twin-engined, olive-green C-47, which is configured with wooden side benches and actually partook of Normandy operations. 

During a recent summer flight, the aircraft taxied out to Republic Airport’s Runway 1 and initiated its piston engine-propelled acceleration roll, raising its tailwheel and surrendering to the flawlessly blue sky while retracting its undercarriage. 

Climbing to 1,200 feet and maintaining a 125-mph airspeed, the Douglas twin straddled Long Island’s south shore off of Jones Beach, which simulated the similar sands of Normandy.

Upon reaching the designated “drop zone,” the jumpmaster yelled, “Stand up!  Check equipment!  Hook up!” and the paratroopers connected their lines to the aircraft in preparation for imminent bailout. 

Parachute jumping procedures were drilled and the actual, 1944 event was recounted.  Regrettably, the realism necessarily had to end there. 

Nevertheless, after relanding, the sensation of the D-Day disconnection during the real jump was recreated as the temporary troopers climbed out the aft, left hatch, their Velcro-attached lines separating with gentle tares, a symbolic disconnection from machine before being gravity-induced into an exponentially accelerating tumble to French soil until the unraveling surfaces of their parachutes blossomed into arresting airfoils. 

Before removing uniforms, passengers are instructed to reach into their pockets to retrieve a card which reveals the identity of their historical double—or that paratrooper they had represented during the simulated mission.  The paratrooper, however, had made the actual jump.  And the card indicates whether he had lived or died as a result of it. 

Other than the American Airpower Museum’s own C-47 flight experience, vintage aircraft static displays and aerial opportunities are scheduled during holidays and special occasions, such as during Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, historical anniversaries, and the annual Labor Day Flight of Aces weekend, the latter created to encourage young people to write about the virtues, victories, and achievements of a World War II-age friend or relative.  The winning composition is awarded a bomber flight experience.  Aircraft have included the MATS C-121 Constellation; the Berlin Airlift “Spirit of Freedom” C-54; the B-17 Flying Fortress; the B-24 Liberator; the B-25 Mitchell; and the PT-17 Stearman, the last four of which were operated by the Collings Foundation. 

A post-museum visit dinner at the 56th Fighter Group Restaurant located on the Route 110 side of Republic Airport, although not affiliated with the museum itself, both complements and completes a World War II living history day.  Resembling a 1940 wartime English farmhouse, it further transports the diner to this era with its “Officer’s Mess” entry; rustic, timbered ceilings; fireplace-adorned dining rooms; World War II-related photographs, memorabilia, and propellers; simulated, bombed-out patio; Big Band music; and views of replica P-40, P-47, and Corsair aircraft.  The steak and seafood menu is noted for its signature beer-cheese soup. 

The American Airpower Museum is a living aviation time portal to World War II and Long Island’s invaluable contribution to its victory of it.  A post-museum dinner at the 56th Fighter Group Restaurant provides the culinary cap to it. 

4. Bayport Aerodrome Living Aviation Museum 

The Bayport Aerodrome Living Aviation Museum, created by the Bayport Aerodrome Society to preserve and present early-20th century aviation at a representative turf airport, is a 24-hangar complex of privately owned antique and experimental aircraft located at Bayport Aerodrome. 

The aerodrome, three miles southeast of Long Island MacArthur Airport, is a nontowered field with a single, 150-foot-wide by 2,740-foot-long grass/turf runway (18-36) and 45 based single-engine aircraft.  Of its average 28 daily movements, 98 percent are local, with the remainder transient.  Designated Davis Field from 1910 to 1952, it had then been renamed Edwards Airport until 1977, whereafter it had been acquired by the Town of Islip.  On January 22, 2008, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a feat proudly proclaimed by its plaque, which reads: “Bayport Aerodrome.  Only L.I. public airport w/ grass runways.  National Historic status 2008.” 

Formed in 1972 for the very purpose of preserving such an era, the Bayport Aerodrome Society conducts complementary tours on weekends between June and September of its operational aircraft collection, which includes Piper Cubs, Waco biplanes, N2S Stearmans, Fleet Model 16Bs, Byrds, and PT-22s.  There is also a small museum. 

5. Grand Old Airshow 

The Grand Old Airshow, first held in 2006 at Brookhaven’s Calabro Airport, was created to transport spectators to earlier, biplane and World War II eras and showcase Long Island aviation. 

Calabro Airport itself is a 600-acre, nontowered, municipal field which was constructed during the Second World War to provide logistical support for the Army Air Corps, but was acquired by the Town of Brookhaven in 1961, whose Division of General Aviation now operates it.  The field, sporting two runways—4,200-foot Runway 6-24 and 4,224-foot Runway 15-33—is home to three fixed-base operators which offer tie-down pads, T-hangars, conventional hangars, flight instruction, and refueling, as well as Eastern Suffolk Boces, the Dowling College School of Aviation, the Long Island Soaring Association, and Island Aerial Air.  There is a small terminal with a luncheonette.  Of its 217 based aircraft, some 92 percent encompass single-engine types, and it averages 370 daily, or 135,100 yearly, movements. 

The airshow entices the visitor by urging him to “join us this year as we go back in time to celebrate Long Island’s Golden Age of Aviation,” a time when “biplanes graced the skies decades ago.”  It continues by offering the experience of “bygone days of aviation, as World War I dogfights, open-cockpit biplanes, World War II fighters, and, of course, the famous Geico Skytypers, soar through Long Island’s blue skies.” 

Previous shows have featured antique vehicles and static aircraft displays, the latter encompassing TBM Avengers, Fokker Dr-1s, Nieuports, and Messerschmidt Me-109s, while aerial stunts have included comedy maneuvers performed in Piper J-3 Cubs by “randomly chosen” audience member Carl Spackle; Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome-borrowed Delsey Dives and balloon bursts targeted by Great Lakes Speedsters, Fleet 16Bs, and PT-17 Stearmans; speed races between runway-bound motorcycles and airborne, low-passing PT-17s; aerobatics by SF-260s; and skywriting by Sukhoi 29s. 

A Sikorsky UH-34D Sea Horse Marine helicopter, used for combat rescue in Vietnam, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and by NASA during the Project Mercury astronaut recovery program, demonstrated search-and-rescue procedures.

Both Long Island aviation and formation flying are well represented.  Past shows have featured Byrd, N3N, Fleet Model 16B, and N2S Stearman aircraft from the Bayport Aerodrome Society; P-40 Warhawks and P-51 Mustangs from Warbirds over Long Island; F4U Corsairs from the American Airpower Museum; and North American SNJ-2s from the Republic Airport-based Geico Skytypers. 

Vintage vehicle and aircraft rides are available.  Spectators bring their own lawn chairs and line them up next to the active runway.  There is period dress and speeches are given by Tuskegee Airmen.  Concession trucks sell everything from hot dogs to ice cream and souvenirs and numerous aviation-related schools and associations man booths. 

The Grand Old Airshow, held in the fall, is a single-day, single-visit, outdoor glimpse toward the sky where Long Island’s multi-faceted aviation history was written and where it is now recreated. 

6. Grumman Memorial Park 

Grumman Memorial Park, located on a one-acre site of the former Grumman Aerospace Flight Test Facility in Calverton only one thousand feet from one of its runways, is, according to its self-description, “a volunteer effort paying tribute to the incredible advances in aviation and space flight that took place on Long Island thanks to the teamwork of the employees of the Grumman Corporation.  This dedicated band of people took aviation from the fight deck of a US Navy aircraft carrier to man’s first steps on the moon.” 

Leroy Randle Grumman, the man behind this company’s name, had been born on January 4, 1895 and established the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation 35 years later, according to the park’s plaque “in a small garage in Baldwin, Long Island, New York.  There and later in Valley Stream, Farmingdale, Bethpage, Calverton, and locations throughout the country, the company designed and produced innovative aircraft and spacecraft for both the military forces of the United States and the civilian market.”  Incorporated in all these designs had been the company’s straightforward philosophy of “keep it simple…build it strong….make it work.” 

Phase One of the park, completed on October 28, 2000, had been dedicated to “preserving the legacy of the Grumman Corporation (and) to the men and women who designed, built, and flew the aircraft and spacecraft that soared into the heavens and beyond.” 

Centerpiece, mounted on a pedestal in a climbing profile, is an F-14A Tomcat.  Powered by two 20,900 thrust-pound, afterburner-equipped Pratt and Whitney TF30-P-414A turbofans, the swing-wing, variable-geometry fighter, whose sweepback varies from 20 degrees in the forward to 68 degrees in the aft position, was the 331st such Tomcat airframe to roll off the nearby Calverton assembly line and first flew from the almost arm’s reach runway on July 6, 1979.  Delivered two months later to the US Navy’s VF-101 Fighter Squadron in Oceana, Virginia, it carried 2,385 gallons of fuel, including that accommodated in two, 267-gallon external tanks, and had a 1,191-mile nonstop range.  The Mach 2 aircraft had provided 25 years of service before being decommissioned, and had been one of 712 F-14s to have been produced between 1970 and 1992.

Surrounded by inscribed bricks, which comprise the “Walk of Honor,” the display has several interactive features, including a visitor-controlled audible recording of its story, sounds of an afterburner take off, and wing and tail light activation. 

The second aircraft on display, part of the park’s Phase Two expansion, is the Grumman A-6E Intruder located on the other side of the small parking lot.  Tracing its origins to its initial version, the A2F-1 which had first flown in 1960, it was one of 693 all-weather attack aircraft which were powered by two Pratt and Whitney J-52 P-8B turbojets and had maximum take off weights of 58,600 pounds.  Operating at 42,400-foot ceilings, the 648-mph aircraft could deliver eight 500-pound bombs with pinpoint accuracy, and it could carry an entire arsenal of weapons, striking targets more than 500 miles from the aircraft carrier on which it had been based without the need for refueling.  Production ceased in 1997. 

Aside from the two aircraft themselves, displays include the original Calverton Plant 7 flagpole, a Bethpage Plant 14 guard booth, and a Bethpage runway section, along with its side light, from which every Grumman F6F Hellcat had taken off. 

Also viewable is a Hughes AIM-54A Phoenix long-range air-to-air missile, an integral part of the F-14 Tomcat AWG-9 Weapon System.  Featuring a 13-foot length and three-foot wingspan, the device had a 1,021-pound gross weight, of which its 132-pound warhead had been propelled by a solid rocket motor.  Traveling at a speed of Mach 5, it had a 96-mile range.  The F-14 could carry up to six such Phoenix missiles. 

Grumman Memorial Park, a work-in-progress whose nine additional acres will eventually encompass a visitor center and other aircraft displays, offers an initial glimpse into Grumman’s superior military designs only yards from the factory which had hatched them. 

7. Conclusion 

Long Island’s six-decade aerial journey, which had begun on its Hempstead Plains in 1909 when Glenn Curtiss had first taken off in the Golden Flyer biplane and ended when the Lunar Module had first landed on the moon’s Sea of Tranquility in 1969, is expertly recounted by its world-class aviation sights.

It is a 3 star, which is an AAA Tourism Standard. This is a national tourism body of the Australian monitoring organisations, which manages the STARS Accommodation Classification Schemes. The YHA is the first network of backpacker hostels to use this and 3 stars indicated a well-appointed establishment with comfortable accommodation and facilities.

**TRANSPORT**
 

We got to the hostel from Brisbane by the Greyhound bus. It is 7km from the bus terminal so it’s not a distance you would want to walk but there is a YHA shuttle bus, which picks you up, free of charge. Once you get off the Greyhounds bus it is waiting for you plus they will bring you back to the bus terminal again free of charge at designated times (these times are posted on the wall in reception). It runs 7 times a day. Another method to get there is by train. The hostel is 30km to the station however you can get a local bus which will bring you from the train station to the hostel. If you are flying the hostel is 3km from the airport.

**FACILITIES**
 

Hervey Bay has no town centre, rather it has 5 shopping villages between housing. The closest is Urangan, which is 5-10 minutes walk from the front door. As well there is speciality shopping at the marina about 5 minutes away. Its 800m to the nearest food store which is in a shopping complex and happens to be a Woolworth’s and there is also a convenience store. There is a bar and eatery in the YHA itself, which does cheap meals for roughly . They have a set menu with various different dished. I am not sure what they taste like as we cooked out own food. Do bare in mind there is no oven in the kitchen just cooking rings and a microwave. You can store food in the fridge they have provided. The kitchen isn’t super clean but this is a hostel and compared to others I think that it was cleaner than others were and I didn’t mind cooking in it. In the eating area there was a TV so you could watch TV and eat at the same time or if you wanted you could have ate at the bar area. When cooking in hostels you need to remember that you have to tidy up after yourself and wash and dry your dishes.

There are several computers at the bar area which you can access the internet. Time codes can be purchased from either the front desk or the bar during opening hours. You may log in and out as many times as you wish until he expiry of your time code. This area was never overly crowded and computers were always free, however it cost an hour to access the internet.

There is a medium sized pool, which a net can be put up so volleyball can be played. Beside it is a spa, which about 4 people could fit into at any one time. The pool and surrounding area is clean and I seen several children playing there in my stay. There is a shower and toilet right beside the pool, as well as picnic tables, seating area and sunloungers. Over the fence beside the pool there is a pond which is supposed to have ducks, though I never seen any. In fact the pond to me just looked like flooded swampy grass, but I never got too close to investigate it properly.

At reception there is a tour booking service. Here you can buy postcards, digereedoos and snack food. You can book any tour the YHA offers here. The main attraction as you are right beside it is the most sought after locations on Fraser Island. If you are lucky enough to arrive and stay here from July to November you can go whale watching on the beautiful esplanade and beaches. The only place in Hervey Bay itself that is within walking distance is the marina, which is a nice walk however, I would not come here to see it alone. As there is not much to do here I see Hervey Bay as a gateway to Fraser Island and a mere stopover until people move on. To fill in your time in the hostel they have free stuff to do including tennis, monopoly, table tennis and backgammon.

There was complimentary (yes free!) breakfast each morning that was a pleasant surprise for us. It is in the bar and eatery area and runs from 7.00am to 8.30 am. It is self service with cereal, toast, tea and coffee provided. When we arrived at the hostel we got a complimentary drink and piece of cake as we were waiting on the reception to become available, I thought this was a nice touch.

**ROOM**
 

I stayed in a double without an ensuite. It was small, yet comfortable, you could only really fit in your rucksacks and not much else. There was a sliding door with a fly net over it to keep bugs out and I have to say it did this quite well. There was lots of vegetation around out room and my partner only had to remove 2 bugs (which were ants). In the room was a mirror which I found handy and there was a small thin ledge with a lamp o n it. You have some space on this ledge to put your items but not much. A small bin had also been provided. There was no wardrobe or storage area for your rucksack/suitcase, which was a bit of a pain, but there was space on the floor. The room was clean and tidy with bricks on one corner of the wall and white plaster on the rest and clean carpet on the floor. To keep cool (and you need it as it was very, very, very warm!) there was a fan above the ceiling which was kind of noisy. It had 3 settings but at even the highest it didn’t cool the room much and we were left feeling smothered with the heat. If needed there were 2 plug outlets, if you removed the light from the socket. The matrices were thin and you could feel the springs under the bed, which some people may find hard to sleep on. This didn’t bother me and neither did the continuous buss from the fan but what stopped me from falling asleep easily was the chirping of the birds and humming from the frogs at nigh, it drove me mad. I suppose if I had of been staying for a few nights I would have gotten used to it. When checking out you needed to bring your sheets down to the reception as you generally need to do in most hostels.

**OVERALL**

For a hostel I think this one is good. It is clean, offers free lifts from the Greyhound bus and free breakfast so its great value for money. It is easy to relax at the pool or around the complex as they have gardens, pools, ponds and geenery. The only down side is that there isn’t much to do in Hervey Bay itself. Also the charming wildlife that likes to keep you up at night while you are far too warm. It is a great stopover on the way to Fraser Island to suit someone on a budget and definitely is one of the better hostels I have stayed in.

This bracket does include an electrical junction box which holds the wiring connections for the bulb.

The casing is lined with a reflector which transmits a better light to the room and is made of quite shiny material. The lamp holder, and also the socket, mounts into the housing’s upper end and therefore the light bulb is fitted into it. The holder can be seen as an extension from the opening in the reflector. The room immediately under the ceiling receives light courtesy of the reflector’s direction of the light through the casing’s open end. Installations include bar hangers which support the plaster frames, the bar hangers are secured to a set of parallel rafters. The plaster frame serves as an adequate mount for the cylindrical casing. 

The study does qualify for recessed lighting installations, since they do tend to give the room a peaceful atmosphere quite needed for concentration.

I’ve been raising rabbits here on my little farm ( Jones Road Farms ) for a couple of years now to help supply a small local demand for people that love to eat rabbit, but really don’t like the prices they see at meat markets and larger store chains that carry rabbit meat as an alternative meat source. I usually sell them for around each, where as most meat markets are asking to for the same amount of meat.

I call my rabbits “The Other, Other White Meat” as a spin off from ads marketed a few years back by The American Pork Council to help promote the sale of pork as an alternative to chicken. The fact of the matter is, pork tastes nothing like chicken… Rabbit on the other hand is very similar to chicken and can be prepared as a substitute in any dish normally associated with chicken, but people are very close minded when it comes to eating these little fuzzy creatures.

Europeans are far more open minded when it comes to eating rabbits because they understand the nutritional value rabbits provide in their diets. Rabbit is an all white, fine textured meat very similar in taste and texture to chicken breast meat. It is very high in protein, yet at the same time, very low in cholesterol. Many meat eaters that are having to watch their cholesterol intake will be happy to know they don’t have to sacrifice eating meat all together to lower their cholesterol, they simple need to change the source of their meat protein, and rabbit is by far the best choice available.

I’ve been living in the “Chicken Capitol of The World” (Georgia) my entire life, and have accumulated vast knowledge of the chicken industry over the years and would like to pass along some of this accrued knowledge to give many of you a little in-site into the workings of the industry. Immediately after chicks hatch out in the hatchery, they are given growth hormone shots along with their inoculations, then immediately shipped to grow-out houses. The whole truth of the matter will probably never be known because no one has taken the time to study the consequences of long term exposure to growth enhanced foods.

Rabbits naturally grow fast because they have always been at the bottom of the food chain providing food for natural predators like wolves, coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, hawks, owls, etc., and have evolved into a faster growing cycle in order to ensure their survival as a species. Rabbits are able to reproduce when only 20 weeks old, and have large litters of kits (6 to 12 depending on the breed) every 3 months, and are relatively inexpensive to raise to maturity. The major costs involved would have to be the housing facilities and feed, and because this is not a wide spread industry, rabbit processing plants are very few and far in between, so shipping large lots to processing plants can be expensive as well.

Although rabbit is a very delicious and nutritious alternative to hormone saturated meats, the to cost in the stores is a direct reflection of the industry’s infancy in The United States. Hopefully over the next few years people in the USA will come to realize the importance the rabbit industry as an alternative meat source, which in turn will create more processing plants and jobs. Once this occurs, the price in grocery stores will fall to reasonable rates so everyone can afford to enjoy a healthy meat on a regular basis.

Never let it be said that America cannot adapt to changing circumstance.

After 18 months of recession (and three months of “growth” purchased wholly with borrowed and invented money), and with official unemployment slated to remain at roughly 10% for the foreseeable future (and unofficial unemployment somewhere closer to 20%), three iconic marketing giants have stepped up to the plate, squinted steely-eyed at the pitcher, and swung for the fences.

The first batter in the box (and yes, I was up waaaay too late last night watching the Yankees drub the Phillies in the last game of the World Series) is Dallas-based 7-Eleven Inc.

Senior merchandising and logistics VP Kevin Elliott figures that “the consumer is really pinched as far as discretionary income.” He’s been seeing a lot of success with products that “really resonate on a value basis,” like the store-branded “7-Select” beef jerky line the chain introduced last year.

Your Most Basic Post-Crash Needs

So now 7-Eleven is launching a new wine label: “Yosemite Road.” It will start off by offering a chardonnay (described as zesty, with notes of apricot, peach and honey), and a cabernet (“full bodied with juicy plum overtones”). Both are slated to sell for .99 a bottle.

7-Eleven is placing this new-age plonk in some 15,000 stores in the U.S. and Japan. Market researcher IRI’s president, Thom Blischok, lauds the move as “fulfilling your most basic needs.”

The ads might read: “When you want one for the road… think ‘Yosemite Road.’”

Folks, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried. (Okay, I made up that ad. But the rest? Pure unadulterated reality.)

Moving on…

“She’s All Grown Up and on Her Own…”

The next icon to step up is Mattel (MAT:NasdaqGS), maker of “American Girl” dolls. If you do not have daughters, nieces or granddaughters, then perhaps you have been spared the onslaught. The rest of you already know all too much about these foot-tall 0 “collectible” mannequins, replete with detailed backstories and historical clothing.

The latest girl to join the fold is “Gwen.” Much like the rest of the line, Gwen can be purchased for 5 with a friend, some clothes and a couple of storybooks, or for on her own.

And much like the rest of the line, Gwen has a unique biography: She is homeless, and she sleeps in the back seat of her parents’ car.

A .1 Trillion-Dollar Home Run

Finally, our third player is the greatest marketer ever, or even ever imagined. I am speaking, of course, of the U.S. Treasury.

Just how much American debt is the Treasury flogging these days? We are told in a recent (and very quietly released) statement that the department will auction off a record billion in notes and bonds next week.

The offerings are slated to refund .5 billion in maturing securities and raise approximately .5 billion in new cash. Broken down, we are looking at some billion in three-year notes, (up from billion at the previous refunding), billion in 10-year notes ( billion more than last August’s round), and billion in 30-year bonds (up from billion).

MIA: 20-Year TIPS – and Congress

The one product that you don’t see in the mix is the 20-year TIP bond. The Treasury has decided to stop offering these long-dated inflation-indexed notes. It claims that buyers just aren’t interested in protecting themselves in this fashion.

After all, there is no inflation, right? So it couldn’t possibly be the threat of having to pay off these bonds at God only knows what rate some 20 years out. (I will now give you a moment to mop up that coffee you just blew out your nose.)

But that’s just this week’s offerings. The Treasury has been so busy attempting to borrow enough cash to fund Washington’s grandiose spending binge, it will slam up against the Congressionally mandated debt ceiling of .1 trillion sometime within the next four to six weeks.

The Treasury has already asked Congress to raise that ceiling by another trillion. However, the Office of Management and Budget has suggested that the Treasury may soon be returning to the well, because .5 trillion is a far more realistic figure for the additional cumulative deficit we are compounding.

Several senators have responded to the Treasury’s request somewhat stiffly, claiming that they could only vote for such a thing if Congress also empanelled a commission to address future budgets without requiring senators or representatives to actually show up or vote. Heck, the president wouldn’t even have to lift a pen to sign them!

Now that’s stepping up!

Others include ice fishing rods and surf fishing rods, for ice and beach fishing respectively.
Determine the ‘power’ rating you need. This rating is generally determined by type of fishing the fishing rod is rated for and are available from ultra-light all the way to ultra-heavy. You won’t find an ultra-heavy fly fishing rod for example.
The action rating needs to be considered next, this is basically how much the fishing rod bends and returns to the neutral position. This is sometimes referred to as faster or slower. The material and construction of the fishing rod determine it’s action.
Fishing rods are also rated by line weight. Basically this determines the size of the fish it’s designed to catch. Just be aware that deep sea fishing for example requires a heavier line weight than lake fishing.

So you see, once you know the type of fishing that will be done, and perhaps the size of fish that will be caught you can pretty easily choose the perfect fishing rod for that type of fishing.

Whatever you do, do not buy one type of fishing rod and expect to sucessfully use it in all fishing situations, it just doesn’t work that way!
